  • Television - one in three teens can't name the major TV networks. Viewership is down, advertising costs are going up.
  • 90% of homes that have a TIVO or DVR, digital video recorder, skip all commercials.
  • TV ad budgets are shrinking. Every year, Procter & Gamble, the world's largest advertiser, shows increasing percentages of its $4 Billion advertising budget away from TV. Many other companies are following suit and the trend is accelerating.
  • The number of commercials that viewers remember is down a staggering 70% over the past 25 years alone.
  • Only 18% of all TV ads generate a positive return on investment, ROI. A whopping 80% lose advertisers money.
  • Newspaper - half of all newspaper readers are engaged in some other activity while reading.
  • According to the Newspaper Association of America, the number of people employed in the industry fell by 18% between 1990 and 2004.
  • In the book, The Vanishing Newspaper, Philip Meyer calculates the first quarter of 2043 will be the moment when newsprint dies in America as the last exhausted reader tosses aside the last crumbled edition.
  • Among adults in the decade 1990 to 2000, daily readership of a newspaper plunged from 52.6% to 37.5%. That means, obviously, that only 30 something % of the population are actually reading the newspaper.
  • Among the young, things are much worse. In one study, only 19% of those between the ages of 18 and 34 reported consulting a daily paper. Worse, only 9% trusted the information provided.
  • From 1994 to 2004, according to the Newspaper Association of America, general circulation dropped by another 1.3M.
  • Magazines: 46% of all magazine readers are engaged in a similar activity while reading.

  • Magazine readership is down worldwide with predictions for the trend to continue with no end in sight. On a personal note, I have seen our leads and clients that come from trade magazines drop tremendously, thus pushing us OUT of the majority of trade magazines.
  • Does that mean I stop trying? Well, yes for the existing magazines, however, I am doing a new push, but targeting them differently which I can’t share here. However, there IS a hint I gave you earlier when I talked about my conversation with Bob Regnerus…and I!
  • Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report continue to struggle to hold onto readers and may be moving away from print and trying different strategies to win audiences.
  • Radio: new options such as MP3 players, cell phones, iPods, cell phones that play music, Internet radio and satellite radio are chipping away at the traditional radio.
  • Satellite radio subscribers are up to 13.6M listeners. That's more than a third higher than 9M reported at the end of 2005.

          Glad I don't make my living off traditional media alone. (AND I’m making 2 Major Shifts in how I market my business, Dentist Profits, this year…that include expanding my media’s…and ways of accumulating leads and new clients!)

I’m NOT joking about this topic…and neither should you!

          Wait, you're not quite off the hook yet. In fact, there's a whole other class of businesses that's positively getting killed in the battle for attention, both online and off. Got to brace yourself. This is going to get personal. The one person nobody wants to pay attention to today.

          While increasing numbers of people are simply avoiding TV, radio, newspapers and magazines today, truly staggering numbers are building defenses to keep your marketing message away from getting their attention.

          There was a day when you could knock on a stranger's door, ask to come in, have them sell you encyclopedias, a vacuum cleaner, hairbrushes, kitchen utensils, shoes, clothing, even foot powder, right in their living room. Those days are gone for good.

          Today, with so many things demanding your attention, your prospects have to first decide who they're not going to pay attention to, who they're going to do their darndest to avoid at all costs, and you, my friend, are the number one on that list.

          So, there you sit with all your ducks in a row. Your services are perfect, your practice is great, all shining and gleaming. You finally put up a website and it's finished, everything you've done is great and the problem is your fulfillment and your customer service is phenomenal and at long last, you raise your starter's pistol and you pull the trigger.

Silence: nothing but silence.

          6 billion people on the planet, 2 billion people online and not a single one of them is coming to your general website, reading your name recognition ads, branding, and, most importantly NOT CALLING YOUR PRACTICE. So where are your patients?

          Why aren't they throwing themselves at your practice and raving to all their friends. Well, I've got news for you. It's not about the service or YOU, or the marketing, or even the sales process. It's you.

You may as well have said “Hi! I'm a marketer.”

          You know, one of those guys you hate, which you want anything to get away from? Now, give me your attention so I can sell you something. Do that and I promise you, you'll be about as welcome as a preacher in a brothel.

          Fact is your prospects don't like to be sold. They only want to go to a trusted advisor in whom which they can educate themselves to make the right decision. They're not going to waste their attention on you, they're not going to search for you, click on your ads or

          If you probably could imagine, this sounds kind of strange coming from a marketer and an advertiser, as someone who as made all of their money by discovering the secrets of getting patients', clients', customers', prospects' attention, and getting them what they want, and then transforming that skill or transferring that skill over to dental practices and teaching them precisely how to do the same thing.

          I think what I want to share with you first of all is that, there's nothing incongruent about my statement at all.

          In fact, people don't want to be marketed to, and people don't want to be sold. People actually want to choose the services, goods, and products that are going to make their life easier or the ones they enjoy. Where it kind of comes into a little bit is that people don't want to be bombarded with advertising junk or marketed to with goods and services that they don't like.

          You might be thinking will Ed, if people only knew what I could provide them, they would very happily choose my dental practice. The reality is that I wouldn't disagree with you.

          The reality is that 99.9% of the dentists that I work with, and the dental practices that I work with are highly trained, they have great staffs, and are good people, have high integrity, and really want to provide good quality to their patients.

          The challenge is that the patients and the prospective patients don't know that. What we really focused on over the last few years and mastered is number one, how do you get the attention of prospective patients and the families, or the quality patience.

          How do you deal with things? And there's actually an art and science to it. The second thing that's very important is how do you position yourself as the person whom they should trust, and communicate that whole message?

          There's a couple different ways. I'd say number one is, you can't appear just like everybody else. That's probably one of the biggest marketing mistakes that most dental practices make, is they appear just like every other dentist.
