As he sat there "watching" a Quincy rerun, he was almost forced
to smile at himself, and how his traditional marketing efforts
were as over the hill as Quincy.
As his mind wandered, he kept thinking about how he couldn't understand
why it was so hard to get people to talk to. He really did give
great care and was a damned good dentist! He had taken dozens and
dozens of people's ugly teeth and made them look like "million
dollar smiles". So good, that he never had any worries in the months
that he had all kinds of appointments and new patients.
Unfortunately, those months seem to be ancient history. "You are
only as good as your last game," he muttered to himself, using
the athlete's quote.
"And my games are not getting any better. Everyone is so damn
skeptical and petrified to get care. They won't even talk to me
these days. They're so afraid of making any decisions, that they
make no decisions at all!"
The time seemed to slip by, and before he knew it, he was waking
up for another day of work. As he was getting dressed, he was deciding
whether to waste any more money on another ad; or waste more money
on another coupon mailer.
As he was thinking this through, he heard Tony Robbins talking
from the TV on his half-hour commercial. He was just explaining
the definition of insanity:

Larry finished getting dressed, went to work committed to never

hey, what's more important?

Never . So if you are wondering if that is what I am talking about,
put that thought out of your mind.)
OK Ed. Just what are you talking about?
I will tell you in a minute. But first, I want to point out to you the real
reasons the dental profession is in some never-never land about marketing.
1. The so called experts have completely mixed up a fundamental fact of business:
They Consider Marketing And Sales/Case Presentation The Same Thing!
You see it all the time. "Marketing/Case Presentation Training
Workshop." / "Sizzling Marketing Ideas." / "We want to share a
marketing idea with you." "Case Presentations For The Next Century!"
What they are confusing is this:
"Marketing" is the art of getting warm, live, interested bodies
you have never met before, sitting in front of you. "Sales" and "Case
Presentation" is getting those breathing individuals to buy your
services!
A huge difference. For some reason, we have lost sight of this
most important fact. Why, you may ask?
Because our industry leaders have no clue about how to market,
so they focus all their energies on case presentation and clinical
procedures.
Let's face it, case presentation, is a hell of a lot easier than
marketing. Since these "guru's" don't know how to help you get
pre-qualifed, pre-interested, and motivated patients in the door,
they substitute "case presentation" and "office procedures"(management)
for "marketing."
Listen:
You can never substitute case presentation or management for marketing!
Never, ever, ever!! If you don't focus all your efforts on measurable,
response generating, non-product marketing, you will never see
any difference in your practice! You and I both know you can give
care to your patients and convince them to choose your services
from you when they are in front of you. That is not your problem.
Your problem is getting people to give care to!
2. The so called experts have also mixed up one of the most important functions
of human behavior:
Using logical and "intellectual" messages to stimulate responses,
instead of emotions and empathy.
Let me ask you a question. What subconscious message is delivered
to your prospects when you open up with any service you have to
offer as a lead in? I don't care if it's implants, invisalign,
braces, or whatever. I also don't care if your recommendation is
the greatest idea since the VCR. All you are telling your prospect
is:
"I have a service I need to sell you so I can make money."
I know, I know. You don't come off that way to your prospects
because you are not "that type of salesperson." You know what?
I understand. But, I want you to see things from your prospective
patients point of view. From
his vantage point.
Remember, they have no idea who you are. They don't know what
you are like. Or how you want to help them. Or how certain products
in their situation, can be of immense help. All they see is another
service being thrown at them.
And you know what? If you don't use emotion to get them interested,
they will never know how good you are, because you will never get
a chance to enter into their lives! This brings up the most important
point of all:
Nobody buys anything based on "logic." they make 100% of their
decisions based on emotions, and rationalize "logically" afterward!!
We are an emotional species. We cannot separate our emotions from
our thought processes. We all have feelings about any decision
we make.
So why does our profession do the exact opposite?
Because the "guru's", and "professionals" are so convinced their
stuff is the best, and since they either have never been in the
field, or were in the field a million years ago, they have lost
touch with reality. They really think that people should be compelled
to buy from you and accept your recommendations based on your credentials,
your professional status, and/or products or services alone.
Sorry, fellas. The truth of the matter is that no one chooses
a dentist or their services, because of the practice or specific
service. Think about it.
ALL THEY ARE BUYING IS YOU!!!
If they like you, they will buy, and it will not matter what you
have to sell. You could be superman and work miracles, and they
couldn't care less. All they want to buy is you. If you went out
tomorrow and changed everything you do, a prospect would still
buy from you, if they like you!
Now, follow through with me on this. If all they buy is you in
selling situations, why wouldn't the exact same thing hold true
for prospecting?
What we are really talking about here is EMPATHY AND COMPASSION.
How much empathy do you demonstrate by extolling the virtues of
a product?
There is nothing more seductive than demonstrating your caring
and understanding of their life. If people truly believe you empathize
with their problems, and that you are not trying to sell them anything,
they will respond!
(Yes, of course we are trying to sell them things, but NOT YET!
That comes later. First we have to get appointments.)
Am I making any sense?
Touch him. Get into his life. And then he will get into yours!
